"Please, please let me stay!" Children come to us; each with a different story. Each with hopes and dreams for the future. Each with a desire to be loved, cared for and accepted. Each with that void that only Jesus can fill. Read the stories below of two such children:
"Please, Please Let Me Stay!"
Preethi
Preethi's Story
Preethi heard about Good Life School through her cousin who attends our school. She wanted to join school very badly. The problem was we had taken as many students as we thought we could and I felt I had to say no.
Preethi didn't give up. Any chance she had she would come and hang around the school. I noticed her a few times and tried to encourage her that perhaps next year she could come.
One day she pushed into my office and asked with tears rolling down her cheeks if she could speak to me a few minutes. I knew I needed to take time to listen to her. She said she really needs our help. She said her mother died when she was 3 and her father married another woman who has never accepted her. Some of the ways her stepmother has treated her are very sad!
I noticed the scars on her wrist and asked her about them. Preethi said she had cut herself so she could bleed to death so she would not need to live.
Can you imagine being beaten up by your stepmother because you called her "Mom"?
At the end of sharing her plea was, "Can I stay in Good Life Boarding School?"
After talking a bit with the teachers and her aunt we took her in.
She cried for a long time. She said, "This is the happiest moment of my life!"
I have no idea what the future all holds for Preethi but we want to do the best we can for her.
Navya
Navya's Story
Navya showed up at school today after two long years. I told her, "Hey, I haven't seen you for a long time!" Piece by piece her story came back through her teacher's, her mother and Navya herself.
Her father is a very strong Hindu. Two years back Navya had attended our annual Vacation Bible School held at our school. She took home the activity booklet and songs from the week. Her father was very upset and pulled her out of school. In order to cleanse her and appease the gods he took her to many temples to sanctify her. He took every step he could think of to make the gods happy; even going as far as shaving her head as a devoted worshipper would do. He wanted to make sure she was dedicated back go their gods.
During this process Navya became sick. Navya and her mother said they pray to Jesus every chance they get. Navya and her mother begged her father to allow Navya to come back to Good Life School. Finally he allowed her to come.
Her mother's request was, "Is there any possibility to have Navya stay at the boarding school?"
I asked Navya why she would want to stay. Her answer was, "Here, I can sing Jesus' songs!"
Teacher
Please Pray!
Pray for the children of Good Life Slum School and Boarding School that Jesus would continue to have His way in their hearts and bring healing to the many hurts they have experienced.
Pray for our staff that we can be Jesus to them. For wisdom to be the "mommy's and daddy's" that they need during this tender time in their lives. Pray that we can give them the instruction they need to grow into godly young men and women.
Isaiah 25:4 "For thou hast been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall."
~Such is our God!
