Latest News : August 2016

Greetings from Crossfire Youth Ministries.
This month we are highlighting the "family" of Crossfire.

Water Day - is a much anticipated highlight of the summer at Crossfire. Looking at the above photo you can hear the laughter & squeals of the children as they jump into this tub filled with over 600 lbs  of ice. It was very cold.  They enjoyed tossing me into the tub to celebrate my birthday. A home group from Parkview Mennonite Church served a fitting meal for the outdoor activities.  A huge water slide was also a big hit of the evening.

The Birthday cake also has a great story behind it. Some of the elementary students thought it a good idea to surprise me. A young boy insisted the cake be the bus and that it must be perfect. These children have a deep sense of appreciation for this ministry and they love being here so very much.
Thank you DeMaddis & Fox family for a great family evening at Crossfire.
4th Annual Banquet at Weaver Markets.
Mark your calendars and reserve your seat by contacting Jim at 717.278.3102.
The evening runs from 6pm-8pm. Doors open at 5:30pm. We will be highlighting with photos the 25 years of ministry and hearing first hand how Crossfire has impacted several lives of previous attendees. You are welcome to sponsor a table for $300 and fill it with 10 individuals or just come and enjoy a delicious meal & awesome fellowship. Looking for another great evening celebrating the Hand of God at work in the Denver area.

A God Moment.
We have been ministering in the Ashland area for over 10 years. Many times I wonder why God has called us there? However, recently there are 2 siblings who attend whose father ended his life early. This has made a devastating impact on these children. I asked God to provide someone who could share the pain of loosing a father. Here in the Denver area is a 15 year old who lost a father 5 months ago. This student agreed to travel along to Ashland and share.
What an amazing impact this had on the students from Ashland with immediate and real changes taking place. I applaud this student for being willing to share through pain in a difficult situation. However to see the instant fruit was truly powerful. God is at Work.....

Weekly we continue to serve up to 40 children on a Wednesday evening. Thursday evenings up to 30 children & Friday evenings see about 25 teens. Our Ashland Youth Center draws bout 15 each Saturday & 6-10 on a Tuesday evening. As God continues to bring children into our midst we do our best to share the Love of Jesus Christ with each of them. We value your prayers and financial support - Together we are making a difference.
The Denver Fair is fast approaching.  We will again provide a Ring Toss booth. This is a great time to come over to the fair and give encouragement in person. Many of the children will be seen hanging out around the booth. Try your hand and ringing a bottle and trying to win a candy bar or the grand prizes at the close of the fair on Saturday evening.

Thank you for supporting us in Prayer & Finances. You are a valuable part of this ministry Team.
Sincerely,
James L Horning
Executive Director

Public Hearing on Bathroom Bill (SB1306) Set for Tuesday

As we have been informing you for some time, there are serious concerns to your religious freedom and privacy rights due to a collection of proposed legislation - Governor Wolf's Bathroom Bills.

Oppose SB1306This coming Tuesday, one of those proposals - SB1306 - will have a public hearing in Harrisburg. Our Chief Counsel Randall Wenger will be one offering testimony during this hearing with the Senate Labor and Industry Committee.

The Senate Committee is also taking public testimony ahead of the hearing. If you are an employer, a parent or simply someone concerned over this legislation, we encourage you to submit your opinion. Click here to submit or email SB1306@pasen.gov. Please be respectful in your comments.

SB1306 is bad policy: It would remove privacy rights by forcing employers to open their sex-specific locker rooms, showers and restrooms to the opposite biological sex. SB1306 would also undermine the freedoms of those involved in churches, religious schools, ministries or religious non-profits by making it illegal to only hire employees that agree with their faith teaching on sexuality, marriage and gender.

Attend the Hearing: Those advocating in support of SB1306 are working to pack the hearing room this Tuesday. We encourage you to come and attend this hearing scheduled to start at 1pm at the State Capitol in Harrisburg (North Office Building - Hearing Room 1).

In addition, if you are concerned over protecting your religious freedom and your privacy rights, please be sure to contact your State Senator and State Representative.

  • A meeting in their district office can make a huge impact. If you need help locating their office near you, email or call us at 717-545-0600.

Finally, if you're able, a financial boost will allow us to reach more Pennsylvania residents and help make their voice heard in defense of these troublesome proposals. As the state's leading defender of religious freedom and privacy rights, thank you for giving us this boost.

It's a free luncheon for all pastors and their spouse or guest, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Family Council along with Acts 20:28 Pastors, Vision America and Watchmen on the Wall.

The luncheon will include brief but informative presentations and resources that can help you in guiding your church and congregation during this challenging season where religious freedom is under siege, the culture is in freefall, and the political landscape is deeply confusing.

Peace Sunday 2016

In a world ravaged by violence, it is not easy to be a Peace Church – a church dedicated to the ways of Christ's peace. These ways require much intentionality, persistence and even sacrifice. It is not always certain that Christ's ways of peace will be effective. And yet the author of James reminds us that how we plant our seeds matters. If we indeed want the fruit of righteousness (which is closely related to the principle of justice), we must plant in peace. As a worldwide communion of faith, we will be commemorating Peace Sunday on 18 September 2016. How does your church foster the peace that is so needed in our world?

A life with no sin

What comes to your mind when you hear the word hospitality? It usually reminds me of the experience I had when I visited a country in another continent. I thought Colombians were good hosts until a family from a different culture hosted me. It was just amazing: the amount and quality of food they offered, their tangible efforts to make me feel very welcomed, every detail in my room, their questions, their respect and readiness to serve in every possible way.

Prayers of gratitude and intercession

August 2016: Brazil is dealing with an unstable government, trying to recover from economic crisis and preparing for the Olympics, all at once. Pray for the Mennonite churches who are wrestling with how to respond to these political challenges from a biblical, Anabaptist, peace perspective. Pray for wisdom and righteousness as some Mennonites join protests against government corruption. As the Olympics bring people from around the world to Brazil for displays of sportsmanship, pray for integrity among the athletes and fans. Praise God for the opportunity for churches to offer hospitality in the Spirit of Christ. Read more...

August 2016: Zimbabwe cries out for restoration. The churches pray for repentance, peace and healing; that the spirit of unity will prevail among the country's citizens and leaders. We pray that the unemployment rate (over 80%) will decrease. We pray for job opportunities, particularly for the young people. We pray for restoration in the economic sector. We pray that poverty will be eradicated. Earlier this year, a dry spell adversely affected crops and livestock in our country; yet the church continues to give thanks because "the Lord your God…goes with you; he will not fail you or forsake you" (Deuteronomy 31:6). May the Body of Christ be a refuge for all those who are lost, and may we journey together as we grow in faith, placing our hope in Jesus Christ, the owner of all the silver and gold. Read more...

Big Things are Happening, Phil!

Welcome

This month, R.E.A.L. Life Community Services welcomes two additions, Amy Pfautz, as our Administrative Assistant, and Chris Hibbert, as our first Social Worker.  Both are very experienced and will help us move forward in the path the Lord has set before us.

Amy is the mother of 3 young sons and is due with her 4th child in January.  She and her husband live in Ephrata and attend Ephrata Community Church.  Amy has many years of experience administrating  Harvestnet, which she will be able to sow into projects such as the R.E.A.L. website, and keeping us organized at the Lighthouse, in the campus ministry, and with our YouthMax and Momentum ministries.  Please keep Amy in your prayers as she transitions into our ministry and helps us to help more people.

Chris Hibbert is the mother of two beautiful daughters, both who graduated from Cocalico schools and are now successful in their college careers.  Chris and her husband, Bob, live in Stevens and attend DOVE Westgate Church.  Prior to having her children, Chris worked with Children and Youth Services in Philadelphia and with the Community Action Project, connecting people in need with the services that met their needs.  Chris is just the right person to help us help the Cocalico area and shine the Light of Jesus into the darkness that is trying to infiltrate our community.

Rod's Ramblings

Many of you know I have a big heart for Denver, PA!  So I took it quite personally when I heard that someone had robbed the Pharmacy downtown!  The next day I stopped in to visit the pharmacy and let them know we are looking out for them and if they need anything to let me know.  As I serve with the ministry, I've learned that everyone deserves a chance and it didn't change when I saw a man sitting next to the pharmacy steps putting a scarf or shirt over his face.  I immediately scolded him for attempting to look like that robber the day before.  He just shrugged his shoulders and grunted.  I leave town for 20 minutes only to come back and find that this guy had attempted to rob the pharmacy again, and as it turns out it was the same guy who robbed it the day before!  You can't make this stuff up!  This time, they got 'em!  Yes, it crossed my mind.  I thought of taking a picture of the dude, but I didn't want to offend him and he wasn't "doing anything wrong at the time", and who would rob the same store!  Lesson learned: As we continue to serve, let us not lose our common sense.

Let's Beat the Heat!!

Volunteer Opportunities

We still need muscles for building maintenance and upkeep,  along with those willing to help with our upcoming REAL Icy Treats stand at the Denver Fair.  There is also an ongoing need for mentoring through the Lighthouse youth nights.  Starting in October, we need volunteers to help with our Power Packs food Pantry.  If you have any interest in joining our cause to keep services offered and growing, please contact Sunny Redcay at sunnyredcay@gmail.com.  We appreciate all offers.

Renovations In Store For The Lighthouse

As we start offering help to more members of the community, we need to utilize the space we have to it's fullest extent.  While the Lighthouse does have an ADA compliant ramp for entry, there is no access to the bathrooms for anyone with physical challenges.  So, in order to serve our neighbors to the best of our abilities, we are turning the space that was previously used as an office/storage closet at the back of the main meeting room into a unisex ADA compliant restroom.  Architectural drawings have been approved and construction has begun!  We still need to cover cost of materials, please consider helping us!
