Fwd: You can still help the global Anabaptist church in 2014

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: "Mennonite World Conference" <ArliKlassen@mwc-cmm.org>
Date: Dec 30, 2014 5:30 PM
Subject: You can still help the global Anabaptist church in 2014
To: "Phil & Kelly Horning" <philandkelly@gmail.com>

Greetings Phil & Kelly Horning,

"When you come back in one year, you will find no more discrimination in our church". This confident declaration by a young Indian woman following an MWC workshop is an amazing witness to the power of Jesus Christ in our congregations.

Christ has come!  We celebrate Christ's presence in the church, as the Body of Christ here on earth.  Our global Anabaptist church community reflects the grace and love of Jesus Christ – sometimes with difficulty, and sometimes with great strength.

I am asking you to contribute a year-end gift to help strengthen our global Anabaptist church community.

In our recent workshop process in India, we started by asking participants to describe their context of ministry and the challenges they face. In southern India they identified issues of patriarchy in the church; the legacy and reality of the caste system creating discrimination and inequality in the church; issues of rich and poor and how they can relate to each other; and leadership and power issues in the church.

After our three-day workshop, one of the group evaluation questions was: "If we come back to your church in one year, what will be different as a result of this workshop?"  One young woman, with her eyes shining, her smile contagious, and her voice confident, reported from her group: "When you come back in one year, you will find no more discrimination in our church."

May God grant strength and wisdom to continue the transformation we all seek in our own context.

We need each other to wash each other's hands.  This is what grabbed my attention in India.  It takes one to bring the water, another to pour the water, and yet another to provide a towel.  We are not self-sufficient, but we need each other to receive God's blessings.  I encourage you to give what you are able to strengthen our global faith community.

Thank you for being part of a church community where we care for each other.

In Christ,

Dear friends:

In June of this year, the UN refugee agency reported that the number of displaced people in the world had, for the first time in the post-World War II era, exceeded 50 million people. António Guterres, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, remarked that this forced displacement reflects "the immense costs of not ending wars, of failing to resolve or prevent conflict."

From Afghanistan to Colombia and from South Sudan to Syria, families forced to flee for their lives continue to struggle for lives of dignity. MCC's global ministries of relief, development and peace in the name of Christ, carried out together with courageous partners around the world, have been addressing exactly these needs as much today as over the past 94 years.

As 2014 draws to an end, I am struck by the many ways MCC's supporters have helped share God's light this year.  With your help, MCC has responded to needs at home and overseas.

Together, we have:

  • Provided material aid to people who lost their homes because of flooding in the Balkans, and to refugees fleeing violence in Syria and Iraq.
  • Offered affordable legal counsel to immigrants in south Florida who are members of Anabaptist churches.
  • Supported peace education for students who experience violence in Nigeria.
  • Continued rebuilding in communities impacted by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
  • Extended compassion to Central American migrants coming to the U.S.

We are grateful for the many, many ways you enable MCC to share God's love and compassion for all in the name of Christ.

We invite you to visit this Christmas photo gallery to view images of how MCC's work supports people around the world.  We wish you a joyful, peaceful Advent and a Christmas filled with Christ's light.

Blessings,

Bruce Campbell-Janz
