What's happening at the Hub?
May
CORE Tutoring celebrated their last day for the school year by playing a students-versus-tutors soccer game! The students had no mercy on the volunteers, and everyone had an absolute blast.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for a discussion about migration at the border. We watched a brief documentary and heard from panelists and community members who were able to share their own experiences of migration across the border.
This month marked the end of the Hub Missions Internship program! We celebrated together in a year-end retreat and were able to thank all of the mentors and leaders who have poured into us over the course of this year.
June
We are continuing to offer ESL over the summer, and look forward to gathering together for picnics in the park for fellowship with students and volunteers' families. We are also working on plans for growing our program in the fall so prayers are very much appreciated!
We are very excited to be offering an art healing class specifically for teen girls the next few weeks! See attached poster below for more information.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our final installment of our Cultural Meals: an Ethiopian meal! Chef Etayehu blessed us with her incredible food, and we were able to have a Q&A with Ethiopian community leader, Guitar Show. Thank you to all who were able to come out.
Thank you for making it to the end of this newsletter! We will leave you with this reminder of what the kingdom looks like

So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirsaccording to the promise.

Matthew 3:26-29

Teaching Kingdom Relationships in West Kenya

We thank God for the believers in West Kenya who are part of the Kenya Mennonite Church. They are predominantly of the Luo tribe and have their own language. They are warm, welcoming, and eager to learn. They send their greetings to each of you.

We had the opportunity to teach kingdom relationships especially as they apply to marriage. We taught in a college setting as well as in three different church settings. Our teachings were well received.

As a result of our teaching, we found them grappling with concepts like:
  • Sex before marriage – Isn't this necessary so we know we are compatible?
  • Leaving and cleaving – We were told this is something that is not done well.
  • Conflict – It is typical to pull in a third person when there is conflict in marriage.
Two of the bishops said they want to find a few couples that we can train who will then continue to teach these concepts to others. One woman said, "We know this will take generations to change, but we can start by teaching our children and our youth. We can model something different." We look forward to returning to this region.
It's break time and the leaders gather informally to discuss how they should apply these teachings to their marriages.
A pastor from the Massai tribe poses his question to fellow students. He hopes to teach on marriage when he returns home.
The college class discusses marriage and family matters. They were quick to get into lively discussions.
The academic dean and our translator await the prayer for our breakfast. These two men were very helpful to us.
Please pray with us about the following matters
  • Pray for the believers in West Kenya as they seek good ways to apply the teachings to their own marriages. Pray for them as they teach others.
  • We are teaching and training two international groups of couples virtually. The plan is that they in turn will teach other couples who will teach others. Pray that God's Spirit will make these concepts clear and they will know how to apply them in their culture.
  • Pray for wisdom on our part to plan our next trips. We have numerous invitations and desire God's direction in planning each trip overseas.
We are grateful for your prayer and financial support. This work could not happen without help from both heaven and earth.
