Before arriving at Longwood in 2014, he was chief horticulturalist of the Botanical Gardens in Toledo, Ohio.

Additionally, Matthew has taught at Owens State College where he developed an organic farm and training center for the Urban Agriculture Curriculum. Matthew is a proud Master's graduate of Michigan State University in Horticulture Science with emphasis on Landscape Design and Urban Forestry.

Join us March 17th at the Desmond Great Valley Hotel for our Nineteenth Annual Garden Luncheon to hear Matthew Ross' presentation:
Harbingers of Spring Beauty before the Tulips Bloom.
Your support at this event will help Bridge of Hope at Good Samaritan Services, continue our important work in the community, allowing us to offer:
  • Emergency shelter
  • Transitional housing
  • Long-term affordable housing
  • Rapid rehousing
  • Permanent housing support
  • Bridge of Hope program site
Working across two counties, accepting people into the program without regard to age, race, gender, religion or sexual orientation, we have created a program that addresses the broad range of needs faced by those struggling with homelessness in our community.

We hope you will join us and support this important work in Chester and Lancaster County.

New MWC network to encourage, support and connect peacebuilders

"Finding ways to connect, encourage, and have these Anabaptist peace organizations be in solidarity with one another in our common work towards peace has given rise to the emergence of a Global Anabaptist Peace Network (GAPN)."

Prayers of gratitude and intercession

February 2018: Christians all over the word are invited to pray together for South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where many members of our Anabaptist-Mennonite family are suffering. From all faith traditions, we join together in prayer and fasting on 23 February (the first week of Lent according to the Gregorian calendar) for the gift of peace and witness of the gospel to those who are experiencing ongoing socio-political tension and violence in those regions. Click here to read about how MWC is working with partners in the region to respond. Read more.

February 2018: After guerilla violence affected the larger community, Mennonite pastors, leaders and their congregations publicly committed to a continuing proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ and to the peaceful and holistic development of their country, Paraguay. May the Holy Spirit empower them to promote peace, reconciliation and justice in Paraguay as churches united in prayer and faith. Click here to read their public statement in Spanish and German.

Update: Praise God that in early February, two kidnapped Old Colony Mennonite men were returned to their communities. Praise God that Mennonites and other Christians in Paraguay are coming together to pray for peace and reconciliation in the ongoing situation with the guerilla group. Read more.

Important Child Protection Policy Information
As of November 28, 2017, the vendor Pennsylvania uses for the FBI Criminal Background Check is IDEMIA. IDEMIA uses IdentoGO Centers for fingerprint check processing. Pennsylvania's Child Protective Services Law (CPSL) generally requires that paid and unpaid persons who work directly with children undergo two state background checks (the Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance and the Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Check) and an FBI Criminal Background Check. Only volunteers who meet certain requirements qualify for a waiver from the FBI check, which requires fingerprinting. All applicants for an FBI check will be required to register on-line at the IdentoGO website. This workshop is geared toward church staff members and volunteers of churches who have never done VBS, haven't done VBS for years, and those who do VBS every summer.

Samaritan Safe Church
Circle of Hope: For Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse
Circles of Hope are safe places to which we invite survivors to share common ground with other survivors. Together, we will look at the way that our lives have been shaped not only by our stories of trauma, but by our own strength, struggle, and resilience. By exploring God's healing truth and hope through conversation and creative expression, we will consider the many ways that the dark or dormant periods in our lives can give way to growth and new life.

The Circles will be co-facilitated by trauma-trained therapist, Lisa Hanna Witmer, MSW, LSW, and Deb Helt, Senior Safe Church Facilitator & Congregation Support Specialist. Group size will be limited to 8 participants and the cost for the series is $125 for all 6 sessions. Some need-based scholarship assistance is available on request. Meetings will be held at Samaritan Counseling Center (1803 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, Pa.) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on the following Thursdays: March 8 & 22, April 5 & 26 and May 3 & 17.
