What's happening at the Hub?
January
Women's Global Village has begun their Spring Semester with a new group of women. They will continue to meet through May, processing their experiences of migration through journaling and art and learning sewing skills. Pictured above are some of the last group's creations which are currently available for purchase in the city Welcome Center and at the Sweet Shoppe.
English as a Second Language classes started in mid-January. We have been able to offer a few classes specific to Afghan men and women, in addition to a couple other mixed-group classes. We are grateful for those who have made this possible and are excited to see how God continues to grow this ministry in the months and years to come.
We are continuing to meet every first and third Tuesday for Prayer for the Nations. We have spent time in the past months praying for our ESL program and Neighbors Cafe, and praying with YWAM Lancaster for their ministry to the nations. Thank you to all who have joined us to cover our ministry in prayer and to ask the Spirit's presence to fill our space.
February
Early this month we held a Creativity for Healing Training, with a great crew of volunteers and ministry partners joining us to learn. Participants learned to facilitate creativity for healing courses that help to process your life story through the arts. If you would like more information check out the website: www.justcreate.space
Core After school Tutoring is continuing to meet as usual twice weekly. Volunteers work one-on-one with middle school and high school students to complete their homework. During LBC's Missions Conference in February, LBC students came to visit with Core students to encourage them to be thinking about college and their futures.
We also had the opportunity to share with 4th through 6th graders from Lancaster County Christian School this month. They were able to hear from a refugee tell her story (and asked some really great questions!), play some educational games, and make cards to welcome new refugees to Lancaster.
Staff Spotlight: Micah Richardson
Micah currently serves at the Hub with a variety of programs and events, including prayer and the after school program.

In the last few years, the Lord has been instilling in Micah a deep desire to reach out to the next generation and raise up leaders who are seeking after God wholeheartedly. He was connected with the Hub through friends and family and jumped in after attending a prayer night here. Since that time he has been able to connect with youth in a variety of ways through tutoring and soccer in the after school program, and creating games and sharing about the work of Hub 450 at local schools and youth groups.

Micah has blessed many who walk through our doors with his giftings of hospitality and making people feel welcomed–both of which are central to our mission and hope for the space.
Most importantly, if Micah could fill a bathtub with one substance he would choose honey because a) it would be fun to swim through, b) it would feel pure, and c) it would also taste good.
Art for the Heart
We held our first "Art for the Heart" event in February. We will be offering these times monthly as a space for refugees and immigrants to participate in creativity for healing.

Please help us in spreading the word! Currently we will continue to offer these on every fourth Friday at 10 am. All are welcome!

Check out our poster here or contact Katy Deets for more information at katy@hub450.org.
Thank you for making it to the end of this newsletter! Imagine reading the following as a displaced person...

So now you are no longer strangers and aliens. Rather, you are fellow citizens with God's people, and you belong to God's household.

Ephesians 2:19

Imagine the real hope that the gospel takes on when seen through the eyes of a refugee. Imagine when becoming strangers and seeking belonging, citizenship, and family is not merely a spiritual reality but a corporeal and lived reality as well. Most of the people who walk through our doors have left their entire worlds behind, and we hope that what we offer is both real and lasting- a new community, a new family, and new pathways to citizenship and belonging.

Esta carta está traducida al Español después de la de Ingles

As we look at LMC, we know that we will continue to grow in the diversity of many cultures, and sometimes we ask ourselves, how does this work? Apostle John gave us a reassuring glimpse into the future "After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands…" (Revelation 7:9). Yes, the vision is inspiring, but how are we going to get there?

In my recent discussion with a bishop, we talked about different models such as the melting pot model, and the tossed salad bowl model, but when I was reflecting on the conversation this picture came to me. There was a model that was so novel to the world that was patented. It is a multiphase glue. If you go to an airport, take a look at a 777 plane. That plane has two huge GE 90 engines. They are among the most powerful jet engines of our time. Every time I see that plane, I smile, because the engine reminds me of many all-nighters staying at the production plant to make sure the key ingredient for the epoxy glue that was used to make fan blades for that engine, was on specs. Some people said that a single engine has equal power of all the engines of the Titanic! In the early 80's, I was blessed to be a member of a small team to invent the process and produce the toughened epoxy matrix for this application.

The high strength, lightweight carbon fiber composite allows the fan blades to rotate at the maximum speed in flight and the toughened epoxy helps to keep the blades from being damaged when a flock of birds shows up at the front of the engine. After about two years of work, we came up with a glue mixture of several ingredients of different forms. With proper heating and mixing, a processable mixture was made to glue carbon fibers to make parts. The preformed part was vacuum-bagged and heated up to make the blade for the fan. Under heat, the special glue mixture became solid with multiple phases. Each of the phases provided a material character that a one-phase material could not have. One phase is glassy stiff to provide compression strength. One phase gives heat resistance. One phase is tough like rubber to prevent crack formation. They all are inter-mingled with each other under the microscope. But chemically, they are all intimately bonded to each other and the reinforcement fibers to perform perfectly on very stringent requirements for the front part of the jet engine.

I believe that LMC is called to do outstanding work for the Lord. I think that what we are called to be and to do is more than who we are and what we are experiencing. The multicultural LMC is like that valuable glue before processing. Each culture brings its unique potential to the mix. LMC is in the process of becoming intercultural. But the process requires working, praying, and understanding each other. With the help of the Holy Spirit, in Christ's love, we all will be connected with each other to make a transformed LMC. The process of transformation takes a lot of work and yielding. Paul gave us this suggestion: "Be gentle and ready to forgive; never hold grudges. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Most of all, let love guide your life, for then the whole church will stay together in perfect harmony. Let the peace of heart that comes from Christ be always present in your hearts and lives, for this is your responsibility and privilege as members of his body. And always be thankful" (Colossians 3:13-15).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Al mirar a LMC, sabemos que continuaremos creciendo en la diversidad de muchas culturas y, a veces, nos preguntamos, ¿cómo funciona esto? El Apóstol Juan nos dio una visión tranquilizadora del futuro "Después de esto miré, y había delante de mí una gran multitud que nadie podía contar, de todas las naciones, tribus, pueblos y lenguas, de pie delante del trono y delante del Cordero. Vestían túnicas blancas y sostenían palmas en sus manos…" (Apocalipsis 7:9). Sí, la visión es inspiradora, pero ¿cómo vamos a llegar allí?
En mi conversación reciente con un obispo, hablamos sobre diferentes modelos, como el modelo del crisol y el modelo de la ensaladera, pero cuando estaba reflexionando sobre la conversación, se me vino esta imagen. Había un modelo que era tan novedoso para el mundo que fue patentado. Es un pegamento multifase. Si vas a un aeropuerto, echa un vistazo a un avión 777. Ese avión tiene dos enormes motores GE 90. Se encuentran entre los motores a reacción más potentes de nuestro tiempo. Cada vez que veo ese avión, sonrío, porque el motor me recuerda a muchas noches en la planta de producción para asegurarme de que el ingrediente clave para el pegamento epoxi que se usó para fabricar las aspas del ventilador para ese motor cumpliera con las especificaciones. ¡Algunas personas decían que un solo motor tiene la misma potencia que todos los motores del Titanic! A principios de los años 80, tuve la suerte de ser miembro de un pequeño equipo para inventar el proceso y producir la matriz epoxi endurecida para esta aplicación.
El compuesto de fibra de carbono liviano y de alta resistencia permite que las aspas del ventilador giren a la velocidad máxima en vuelo y el epoxi endurecido ayuda a evitar que las aspas se dañen cuando aparece una bandada de pájaros en la parte delantera del motor. Después de unos dos años de trabajo, se nos ocurrió una mezcla de pegamento de varios ingredientes de diferentes formas. Con el calentamiento y la mezcla adecuados, se hizo una mezcla procesable para pegar fibras de carbono para fabricar piezas. La pieza preformada se embolsaba al vacío y se calentaba para hacer el aspa del ventilador. Bajo el calor, la mezcla de pegamento especial se solidificó con múltiples fases. Cada una de las fases aportaba un carácter material que un material monofásico no podía tener. Una fase es rígida como un vidrio para proporcionar resistencia a la compresión. Una fase da resistencia al calor. Una fase es dura como el caucho para evitar la formación de grietas. Todos ellos se entremezclan entre sí bajo el microscopio. Pero químicamente, todos están íntimamente unidos entre sí y las fibras de refuerzo funcionan perfectamente en requisitos muy estrictos para la parte delantera del motor a reacción.
Creo que LMC está llamado a hacer un trabajo sobresaliente para el Señor. Creo que lo que estamos llamados a ser y hacer es más que lo que somos y lo que estamos experimentando. El LMC multicultural es como ese valioso pegamento antes del procesamiento. Cada cultura aporta su potencial único a la mezcla. LMC está en proceso de convertirse en intercultural. Pero el proceso requiere trabajar, orar y entenderse unos a otros. Con la ayuda del Espíritu Santo, en el amor de Cristo, todos estaremos conectados unos con otros para hacer un LMC transformado. El proceso de transformación requiere mucho trabajo y rendimiento. Pablo nos dio esta sugerencia: "Sed mansos y dispuestos a perdonar; nunca guardes rencor. Recuerda, el Señor te perdone, así que tú debes perdonar a los demás. Sobre todo, deja que el amor guíe tu vida, porque entonces toda la iglesia permanecerá unida en perfecta armonía. Dejen que la paz del corazón que viene de Cristo esté siempre presente en sus corazones y vidas, porque esta es su responsabilidad y privilegio de él como miembros de su cuerpo. Y sed siempre agradecidos" (Colosenses 3:13-15).
Treasuring the Legacy . . . Embracing the New
As a Bishop Elders Team, and as LMC, we just experienced a very impactful weekend. Friday was our bi-monthly gathering as bishops and CEC (Conference Executive Committee). As we meet every other month our desire is to spend time together in the Lord's presence in both worship and in our work, discerning God's heart for LMC in this new season. On Saturday many of us attended the memorial Service for David W. Shenk, the oldest son of one of the early EMM pioneer missionaries to East Africa.
These two events stirred me in deep ways in my work as a part of the Bishop Elders Team as we seek God's direction in this new season as network of churches. In both meetings I was reminded of the historic collaborations between LMC and EMM . . . AND the current priority between these two entities. Together, both LMC and EMM, have made a fresh commitment to collaborative work and mission in this season. As the LMC vision states, our aspiration is to be "a Spirit-led movement" . . . this is affirmed by LMC and EMM together. We are still learning to grow in our awareness and sensitivity to the Spirit's leading.
At David's memorial service I was reminded of the legacy that our forebearers carried. They also had an aspiration to be a Spirit-led movement. Without that LMC and EMM would not have traveled to the "ends of the earth" to place pioneer missionaries in East Africa. We must treasure this legacy! Looking back, we can critique and criticize some of those results, but taking the risk to follow the Spirit with human beings who are learning to follow the Spirit, will usually result in some "imperfection". As we treasure this legacy may we also learn from the lessons in our past.
I also was impressed by the Spirit during this memorial service that God not only wants us to treasure this legacy (and build upon it), but is also calling us to embrace the "new" . . . The new things that God is doing in us and among us as a Spirit-led movement. Again, entering the "new" will not be without some imperfection, but we are trusting Holy Spirit to lead us. Please join us in prayer in this regarding . . . "Lord, we ask that you would give us eyes to see and treasure the precious legacy that you've deposited in our midst as a movement and to embrace the new things that you are doing among us that build upon this legacy. Amen!"
Atesorando el Legado. . . Abrazando lo nuevo
Como equipo de Bishop Elders y como LMC, acabamos de experimentar un fin de semana muy impactante. El viernes fue nuestra reunión bimensual como obispos y CEC (Comité Ejecutivo de la Conferencia). Como nos reunimos cada dos meses, nuestro deseo es pasar tiempo juntos en la presencia del Señor tanto en la adoración como en nuestro trabajo, discerniendo el corazón de Dios para LMC en esta nueva temporada. El sábado, muchos de nosotros asistimos al servicio conmemorativo de David W. Shenk, el hijo mayor de uno de los primeros misioneros pioneros de EMM en África Oriental.
Estos dos eventos me conmovieron profundamente en mi trabajo como parte del Equipo de obispos ancianos mientras buscamos la dirección de Dios en esta nueva temporada como red de iglesias. En ambas reuniones recordé las colaboraciones históricas entre LMC y EMM. . . Y la prioridad actual entre estas dos entidades. Juntos, tanto LMC como EMM, han hecho un nuevo compromiso con el trabajo colaborativo y la misión en esta temporada. Como establece la visión de LMC, nuestra aspiración es ser "un movimiento guiado por el Espíritu" . . . esto es afirmado por LMC y EMM en conjunto. Todavía estamos aprendiendo a crecer en nuestra conciencia y sensibilidad a la dirección del Espíritu.
En el funeral de David recordé el legado que llevaron nuestros antepasados. También tenían la aspiración de ser un movimiento dirigido por el Espíritu. Sin eso, LMC y EMM no habrían viajado a los "confines de la tierra" para colocar misioneros pioneros en África Oriental. ¡Debemos atesorar este legado! Mirando hacia atrás, podemos criticar y criticar algunos de esos resultados, pero correr el riesgo de seguir al Espíritu con seres humanos que están aprendiendo a seguir al Espíritu, generalmente resultará en alguna "imperfección". Mientras atesoramos este legado, también podemos aprender de las lecciones de nuestro pasado.
También me impresionó el Espíritu durante este servicio conmemorativo de que Dios no solo quiere que atesoremos este legado (y construyamos sobre él), sino que también nos está llamando a abrazar lo "nuevo". . . Las cosas nuevas que Dios está haciendo en nosotros y entre nosotros como un movimiento guiado por el Espíritu. Una vez más, entrar en lo "nuevo" no estará exento de imperfecciones, pero confiamos en que el Espíritu Santo nos guíe. Por favor, únase a nosotros en oración en este respecto. . . "Señor, te pedimos que nos des ojos para ver y atesorar el precioso legado que has depositado entre nosotros como movimiento y para aceptar las cosas nuevas que estás haciendo entre nosotros que se basan en este legado. ¡Amén!"
