"When is the last time your congregation baptized an adult? Can a congregation be healthy if there has not been a recent baptism of an adult from your local community? Can your small group or cell group be healthy if it consists of the same persons year after year? In my church consultation ministry with more than seventy congregations, most with LMC congregations, very few are baptizing community adults. Everyday we relate to persons who do not identify with a church: our work peers, neighbors, the car mechanic, the barber, the cashier, the bagger, nurses, public school teachers, the mailman, etc. We talk about the weather, the news, sports, family, our frustrations, and the latest gossip. But do we bring God into our conversations? If you have a daily relationship with Jesus as your friend, it will be natural to share your faith. Most people will not be turned off if your testimony lines up with your life. We forget that people need Jesus, or they will be lost for eternity. When is the last time you mentioned God, Jesus, or the church to those you relate to? Ask God to empower you with courage and wisdom; He will answer that prayer. You will find a new joy and excitement that will be contagious and your church will begin to baptize community adults." ~ David Eshleman Formerly pastored Capital Christian Fellowship (an LMC congregation). David baptized scores of adults during his fifty years as a church planter and pastor Thank you David for this word of encouragement and challenge!
