By: Chris Hibbert It has already been almost a year since I started volunteering with REAL Life Community Services which led to me being employed by REAL. The very first family I began working with had a very difficult situation. They were homeless and in desperate need of housing and jobs. I worked with them to find agencies that could help them and they were very willing to help themselves. Through their hard work and willingness to work with the agencies, I am pleased to report that Mom has a job, they are renting an apartment, and they have a vehicle of their own. The family would not have succeeded, though, without the help of numerous agencies, family, friends, and churches pitching in to give them the support they needed. Family and friends gave them short-term housing, co-workers gave them rides to work, churches gave them food and money to stay in hotels, and agencies worked to find them long-term housing, mentoring, and budget-counseling. Sadly, in most situations like theirs, families do not have the support systems they need. They are in desperate situations. That is where we at REAL and community members can help the most. Each family member, friend, church, and agency gave something to help the family. We can do that as well! If you have a talent for budgeting or working with finances, or if you love to drive, or if you just had a bumper crop of tomatoes in your garden, there is probably some way you can help families in our community! Look around, is there a neighbor who doesn't have any support systems who you just might be able to help? Take a leap of faith and offer some help or consider volunteering at REAL! |
