"You prepare a table before me" Psalm 23:5 (NRSV) A table filled with food is a symbol of love and delight. Perhaps this is the reason why in many cultures the celebrations of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year are accompanied with food. In the same way, a table that is prepared to receive a guest is a symbol of hospitality. Each well-organized detail and the carefully prepared food speak to the interest that the host has invested in attending to their invited guests. Throughout the Scriptures we find texts where God focusses attention on us by preparing a table for us. God, the King of the Universe, forgets about Himself, inconveniences Himself and completely surrenders in order to provide us with a banquet. As we celebrate World Fellowship Sunday, lets us remember that God invites us to imitate Him by receiving the stranger that comes knocking at our door. Prepare a table instead of walls is the invitation that God extends through His own example. | Waiting for the Wise Men by Lee Kaercher |
