We are Family!
Participating in God's Family

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Greetings to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, our Prince of Peace!

We invite you and your congregation to observe Peace Sunday together with brothers and sisters in the global Anabaptist church family on 17 September 2023.

Accompanying this letter, we send worship resources you may use in celebrating Peace Sunday in September or at any time that suits your worship calendar. Please feel free to use only the pieces that are useful for your worship gathering.

The theme for this year's Peace Sunday is: "We are Family! Participating in God's family."

This year's Peace Sunday resources explore what makes a "family" a space in which people can embody just and peaceful relationships with one another, witnessing to God's shalom.

In Matthew 12:46-50, Jesus challenges and re-draws images of family: not prescribed by a given structure but shaped by the quality of relationships; not characterized by the absence of conflict or tension, but how these are addressed.

May these resources help us in this pursuit.

Kairos is a nine-session interactive study of the Purpose and Plan of God for His people and His world from Genesis to Revelation.

Kairos is for all Christians at any point in their journey with God. It is not a "missions" course. It is an opportunity for all of God's people to have their worldview transformed and aligned with God's heart for the nations. He has called us all to play a part in His mission both locally and globally and there are many different roles to fill.

Photos showing life at Welsh Mountain.
For nearly a century, Welsh Mountain Home has provided a safe, affordable and loving community for those who call this place 'home.' That means there are likely photos and other memorabilia in the surrounding churches and homes. If you have access to photos showing life at Welsh Mountain Home since 1924, please contact Larry Guengerich at LGuengerich@Landis.org or 717-381-3526.

The No Longer Alone Family Support Group, supported by Landis Communities, meets the fourth Sunday of the month.  The guest speakers for August will be Mia Carbaugh, a part of a family of NLA FSG members.  Her presentation "Living Life to the Fullest with Brain (Mental) Health!" will be followed by a time of sharing.  The public meeting is scheduled for Sunday, August 27, 2023 from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. in the Crossings Meeting Room of the Calvin G. and Janet C. High Learning and Wellness Center at Landis Communities, 1001 East Oregon Road, Lititz, PA. The monthly meetings provide a place for those who have a loved one living with mental illness to learn and share their experiences.  For information or to receive a monthly meeting reminder, call 717-381-3599 or email JAlbright@landis.org.

EVENTS

Annual Storytelling Night
In a celebration of stories that transcend boundaries, Mennonite Life hosts its Annual Storytelling Night Monday, August 7, 7 p.m. at Landisville Mennonite Church. Throughout the evening, storytellers Karl McKinney and Karen Sensenig will relate a series of alternating short form anecdotes from their lives.  Karl McKinney lives with his wife Kellie in Landisville, Pennsylvania. Karl serves as the Intercultural Leadership Minister of LMC (formerly Lancaster Mennonite Conference), and is focused on helping LMC address oppression in its mindset, systems, and structures.

(Re)Reading Menno Simons: Old Words with Fresh Life
In a series of Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage articles, Gerald J. Mast is exploring the life of Menno Simons and the development of what Menno called "true evangelical faith," a self-aware and hopeful posture toward neighbors, salvation, and God. Mennonite Life offers members an opportunity to interact with Mast at a night of reflection and storytelling on August 24, 7 p.m., in the Mennonite Life Community Room. Mast, a professor and author, will share his personal passion for the works of Menno Simons, and introduce the series, which will focus on five key theological characteristics of Menno's true evangelical faith. The first installment of this series was published in July.

Mennonite Life Archivist & Librarian Julia Wiker will also offer attendees an exclusive look at a rare 1681 edition of Menno's works in Dutch. The collection includes an illustration by engraver Jan Luyken, creator of the images found in the Martyrs Mirror.

This event is complimentary. Members may attend in person or via Zoom, and must pre-register online at mennonitelife.org/events.
