"Like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house"
1 Peter 2:5 (NRSV).

Rejection of all that is different; hate toward other cultures; the selfish search for one's own well-being to the exclusion of all else: many societies around the world choose to live this way right now.  Even so, those of us who follow Jesus are called to enjoy a different kind of society, one that is multicultural and urges all to celebrate diversity and be enriched by it.

Mosaics are a great example of the above-mentioned society.  Christian artists across the centuries have created mosaics like the one at the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo in Italy.  In this mosaic, stones of different colours and sizes are organized in such a way that the viewer is able to see an image of Jesus.

The apostle Peter invites us to grow like living stones, building a new society that contrasts with the societies at hand. A mosaic made of living stones requires that each and every stone intentionally chooses to participate, assuming its rightful place and faithfully occupying it.  A new society of this nature is built with love and determination. As we celebrate Peace Sunday, let us remember that in Christ our differences lead to growth, peace and harmony.  As we welcome those who are different, we reveal the face of Jesus to the world.

In Christ,
