Unique to the quilt preview this year are quilts and wall hangings made from submissions to "The Charity Block Design Challenge" through The Old Country Store in Intercourse, PA, and Jaftex Corporation, a fabric manufacturer in New York City.

After The Old Country Store won a Jaftex Facebook contest through the company's CEO Scott Fortunoff, the store chose MCC and the Pennsylvania Relief Sale as the charity recipient of their win. The store decided to hold an event, with Fortunoff as the main speaker, and paired it with the "Challenge" where registered participants received a mystery pair of fat-quarter fabrics beforehand from one of five featured Jaftex designers: Kaffe Fassett, Kim Diehl, Tula Pink, Tim Holtz or William Morris. Jaftex donated the fabrics for the "Challenge."

Participants were then asked to create a 10.5" x 10.5" quilt block, including the two fabrics they received, in any pattern. On November 29, 2018, at Shady Maple in East Earl, Pa, event goers voted on their favorites in five categories—best use of color, best pieced, best applique, best non-traditional and people's choice—with favorites receiving prizes. Winning blocks were sewn into individual wall hangings while many of the other submissions were made into sampler quilts. Over 150 blocks were submitted for the "Challenge."
