Over nearly five decades of ministry, Dr. Dobson's voice and vision helped shape the pro-family movement in America. Through his founding of Focus on the Family and the James Dobson Family Institute, Dr. Dobson's broadcasts were heard across hundreds of stations, reaching hearts and homes around the globe. He advised presidents and world leaders, yes, but just as importantly, he came alongside moms and dads like Susan and me, equipping millions to raise their children with biblical conviction and grace.
Perhaps you were among the nearly 1,600 people who gathered in Lancaster to hear Dr. Dobson in 1999 at PA Family's tenth anniversary banquet or again in 2014 for our 25th anniversary. He and his wife, Shirley, loved coming to Pennsylvania, where they had some great friends and partners in their ministry, and they truly appreciated the opportunity at both events to express their gratitude to everyone who supports the work of the Pennsylvania Family Institute.
Dr. Dobson's impact on my life, my family, and the founding of the Pennsylvania Family Institute cannot be overstated. In many ways, the PA Family and nearly 40 other state-based Family Policy Councils were established and received support thanks to Dr. James Dobson's vision and endorsement. In our early days, his encouragement and example provided a pattern to follow: to serve families, defend truth, and trust God to bring the increase.
Be There.
Fittingly, the theme of the memorial service was simple yet profound: "Be There."
It was a phrase Dr. Dobson often used. This was an exhortation he gave to his son Ryan, and one that captured his deepest desire for every person he touched – whether through broadcasts, his books, or personal interactions: that they would be there in heaven, when, as the old hymn says, "the roll is called up yonder."
In remembering Dr. Dobson, I found myself reflecting on the kind of legacy we each leave behind. Not in titles or achievements, but in faithfulness in how we love our families, serve our neighbors, and point others toward Christ. Jim Dobson lived that way. I am grateful that I had the opportunity at the memorial service to speak to and thank Mrs. Shirley Dobson on behalf of Pennsylvania and my colleagues in states across America, for the incomparable legacy they have left.
As we continue our mission here at Pennsylvania Family Institute, I am reminded that what Dr. Dobson modeled still matters deeply today: speaking objective truth, defending the family with courage, and remaining steadfast in obedience to Christ. Our Commonwealth, our nation, and our culture need that kind of witness now more than ever.
Let's each commit to following that example—to "be there," to be faithful where God has placed us, and to pass along a legacy that endures beyond this life.
In memory of Dr. James Dobson,
