News & Events September 22, 2025 EVENTS RESEARCH VISIT MEMBERSHIP DONATE Maize & Snitz Fest The 1719 Museum will host Maize & Snitz Fest Saturday, October 4, 10 a.m.– 4 p.m, featuring historical demonstrations, local vendors, and tours of the Herr House and Lancaster Longhouse. This year the event features exciting new activities. Guests can bid on silent auction items, courtesy of local donors, artists, and businesses. To commemorate the 500th anniversary of Anabaptism, one rare book printed in Europe and one rare book printed in America, both related to the Herr family, will be on display. Specific activities for children include crafts, eighteenth-century games, and a scavenger hunt with prizes. Find information and tickets at mennonitelife.org/events. Author Talk: An Uncommon Woman with Mark Kelly Join Mennonite Life for an evening with Mark Kelley, author of An Uncommon Woman: The Life of Lydia Hamilton Smith on Thursday, October 23, 6:30 p.m. in the Mennonite Life Community Room. Lydia Hamilton Smith was a prominent African American businesswoman in nineteenth-century Lancaster, and the longtime companion of the abolitionist congressman Thaddeus Stevens. An Uncommon Woman explores how Smith served the cause of abolition, managed Stevens' household, acquired property, and crossed racialized social boundaries. This event is complimentary.
