PRAISE & PRAYER
John 3:30
He must become greater; I must become less.

ITEMS FOR PRAISE
  1. We praise the Lord for a staff and board of directors who desire to see many lives touched by God at Spruce Lake.
  2. Great summer of ministry at Spruce Lake - lives continue to be changed for Christ!  I am excited to say that at least 10 campers asked Christ to be their savior this summer.  Nine are from Wilderness Camp and one is from Day Camp.  At least 4 campers were baptized; we found out that one staff member was baptized this past weekend at her home church, too!  There were also over 20 re-commitments at WC. Over all, WC and DC served just shy of 1,000 campers this summer.  God truly blessed the summer!
  3. We know of at least four adults that accepted Christ as Lord and Savior at Spruce Lake this summer!
  4. Sib Nafziger Charles, Spruce Lake Board Member and Community and Church Relations Manager Joni and Friends Eastern PA shared the following praises from their three weeks at Spruce Lake this summer!
    • A dad of multiple children with disability came to know Christ during a Joni and Friends Family Retreat.   Another praise with this one is that the family just moved and one of our JAF volunteers is a pastor of a church very close to where this family now lives and we got them connected.  This pastor has agreed to disciple the dad that accepted Christ.  Love the Body Christ of Working together.
    • Between the three Joni and Friends Family Retreats we had the privilege of serving over 130 families affected by disability.  What a joy to honor, love, and celebrate all these precious families.  Most important we had opportunity to literally be the hands of feet of Jesus to the parents, siblings, and the children/adults with disabilities!
ITEMS FOR PRAYER
young_woman_praying.jpg
  1. Please pray that God would prepare the hearts of the arriving guests for what He wants to teach them while they are here.
  2. Pray for wisdom for each one involved in creating the 2017 Budget.
  3. Pray that we might have the opportunity to point people to Christ through the upcoming Labor Day Weekend Events, Women's Retreat and The Trinity Tour Motorcycle Ride.
We pray that you are growing closer to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

In Christ,

Franklin Graham encourages
Louisiana homeowners
Samaritan's Purse staff and hundreds of volunteers are already on the ground in south Louisiana to help residents recover from devastating floods.
Franklin Graham recently saw the devastation firsthand. More than 90 percent of homes were inundated in parts of East Baton Rouge Parish. "I always believe when people get in trouble you run to them and you help them," he said. "That's what we're doing, we're running to the homeowners here."
This recovery will take many months, and more volunteers are critically needed.
Please pray for the people of Louisiana and our teams based around south Louisiana as they minister to disaster victims in Jesus' Name.

Twelve Back-to-School Safety Tips for Parents

By Dove's Nest Board and Staff

1. Ask your children how they felt about a new experience at school. Rather than simply asking "What did you do today?" ask "What was your favorite part? What are you most proud of? Did you ever feel unsafe?"

2. Inquire about your school's protection policy, especially if it is a private school. Encourage Christian schools to teach Circle of Grace, a Christian safe environment curriculum for kindergarten through twelfth grade.

Speaker's Bureau Expands to Nine Members

Dove's Nest launched its national Speaker's Bureau in January 2015. We are proud to now have nine members from across the country—from Arizona to Oregon to Nebraska to Pennsylvania to Virginia and other states in between. Training topics include developing a child and youth protection policy, guidelines for including in worship persons who have committed sexual offenses, implementation information for the Circle of Grace child protection curriculum, and more. Presentations can be uniquely tailored to your faith community.

NEW! Protection Policy and Checklist Now Available in Spanish

We have added more Spanish resources to our website! In addition to the Spanish Circle of Grace materials and the Spanish version of our church protection policy checklist, we now offer Spanish versions of our school protection policy checklist and our model child and youth protection policy (short version). These documents are foundational to creating a safer church and school environment for children and youth, and we invite any and all Spanish-speaking faith communities to utilize them freely. We are grateful to the two volunteers, Grace Weber and Virgen Robbins, who made this possible.

Peace Sunday 2016

In a world ravaged by violence, it is not easy to be a Peace Church – a church dedicated to the ways of Christ's peace. These ways require much intentionality, persistence and even sacrifice. It is not always certain that Christ's ways of peace will be effective. And yet the author of James reminds us that how we plant our seeds matters. If we indeed want the fruit of righteousness (which is closely related to the principle of justice), we must plant in peace. As a worldwide communion of faith, we will be commemorating Peace Sunday on 18 September 2016. How does your church foster the peace that is so needed in our world?

Aguapanela: youth and children drink in curriculum's "faith vitamins"

How should Jesus followers respond to the Marrakesh Declaration?

Over the past three years, my family has enjoyed friendship with an extended family from Iraq who came to the USA as refugees and asylum seekers. We have enjoyed meals together in our homes, picnics, hiking trips, choir concerts and church services.

When terrible events happen in the news, we lament together.

A life with no sin

What comes to your mind when you hear the word hospitality? It usually reminds me of the experience I had when I visited a country in another continent. I thought Colombians were good hosts until a family from a different culture hosted me. It was just amazing: the amount and quality of food they offered, their tangible efforts to make me feel very welcomed, every detail in my room, their questions, their respect and readiness to serve in every possible way.

Ministry partner update: ICOMB – August 2016

After the Panama Summit, I met Cesar for the third annual meeting between Mennonite World Conference (MWC) and ICOMB. We discuss matters of mutual interest and concern. We consider MWC to be our "umbrella" global family. We always collaborate so that we don't relate to MB national bodies in different ways, especially if there are problems.

Prayers of gratitude and intercession

August 2016: Brazil is dealing with an unstable government, trying to recover from economic crisis and preparing for the Olympics, all at once. Pray for the Mennonite churches who are wrestling with how to respond to these political challenges from a biblical, Anabaptist, peace perspective. Pray for wisdom and righteousness as some Mennonites join protests against government corruption. As the Olympics bring people from around the world to Brazil for displays of sportsmanship, pray for integrity among the athletes and fans. Praise God for the opportunity for churches to offer hospitality in the Spirit of Christ. Read more...

August 2016: Zimbabwe cries out for restoration. The churches pray for repentance, peace and healing; that the spirit of unity will prevail among the country's citizens and leaders. We pray that the unemployment rate (over 80%) will decrease. We pray for job opportunities, particularly for the young people. We pray for restoration in the economic sector. We pray that poverty will be eradicated. Earlier this year, a dry spell adversely affected crops and livestock in our country; yet the church continues to give thanks because "the Lord your God…goes with you; he will not fail you or forsake you" (Deuteronomy 31:6). May the Body of Christ be a refuge for all those who are lost, and may we journey together as we grow in faith, placing our hope in Jesus Christ, the owner of all the silver and gold. Read more...
