Lancaster Stands for Welcome: Join us in peaceful solidarity.

When: Saturday, August 3rd from 12:30-1:30
Where: Penn Square, Northwest Quadrant

Dear Friends and Supporters of Refugees and Immigrants,

CWS Lancaster will be joining refugee and immigrant advocate groups from across the country in a national Rise for Refuge call to action to push-back against the proposed zeroing out of the refugee resettlement program and the ban on asylum seekers at the border.

On July 18, Politico reported that State Department officials were proposing a severe cut in the number of refugees admitted. Some have suggested lowering that number to zero. After years of declining refugee numbers, zeroing out would effectively amount to a refugee ban.

The We Stand for Welcome event will encourage supporters to contact their elected officials with the specific goal of asking the administration to reconsider these proposals. It will also serve to stand in solidarity with the many refugee families, already in Lancaster, who have been waiting to be reconnected to family members. Many family members are still in refugee camps and/or other countries, going through the necessary steps to be reunited with their families in the United States. The zeroing out of resettlement could mean this process completely stops, ending hope for reunification.

CWS President and CEO, Rev. John McCullough captures the deep sadness all in the refugee community feel at the news: "Shutting down the resettlement program would be unfathomably cruel and dangerous. It would harm U.S. national security, foreign policy, local economies, and our global standing. We will have failed in our promise to protect the most at-risk refugees including religious minorities and Iraqis who served alongside our military and others."

If you would are unable to attend the event, but are able to take action, here is the call to action, with sample script.

Please take note to local media and advocacy efforts that will be taking place over the upcoming weeks. If you would like to support these efforts, please consider making a donation here.

As always, we are grateful to you for support.

In strength,

Sheila Mastropietro, Lancaster Office Director
