On December 3rd at 6:30 PM, LMC is sponsoring a special Zoom event featuring Mark Thiessen Nation leading a conversation around the newly released film Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Spy, Assassin (Angel Studios, November 22). Bonhoeffer was an extraordinary witness to the Christian faith; his life is depicted in this film. This event is free, and all are welcome. It would be helpful, but not necessary, for participants to have seen the film and to have some knowledge of Bonhoeffer's life story. Mark, a former professor of theology at Eastern Mennonite Seminary, will provide an overview of the film, critically engaging the story it tells. Then he will help us reflect on what Bonhoeffer's life and thoughts might still say to us today about Christian discipleship. Questions and discussion are encouraged. Mark has been doing research on Christians in Nazi Germany since 1980. His first essay on Bonhoeffer was published in 1991. He has also authored two books on him: Bonhoeffer the Assassin? (2013) and Discipleship in a World Full of Nazis: Recovering the True Legacy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer (2022). This latter book, in particular, is recommended as a way to engage the film critically.
