Stories by Candlelight

Join us for a candlelit evening of storytelling at the 1719 Museum Friday, January 9, 4:30–8:30 p.m. You'll hear songs and stories passed down for multiple generations among Lancaster County's Indigenous communities and Lancaster County Mennonites.

In the Lancaster Longhouse, musicians will tell stories and play music of the Indigenous flute. In the Herr House, you will hear stories of music and songwriting that were important to Mennonites in the 18th century. A cappella singers will perform English translations of hymns from the Ausbund, a historic Mennonite hymnal used by the Herr family.

Joe on the Go Coffee Co's mobile cafe will be on site with hot drinks and baked goods available for purchase. The museum store will be open for the event.

Admission is $15 for adults, $7 for youth ages 6–16, and complimentary for children 5 and under. This event is expected to sell out, and walk-in admissions will not be offered.

Redware Ornaments Workshop with Emily Smucker-Beidler

At this morning workshop on Saturday, January 17, 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. you'll learn the fascinating history behind Pennsylvania redware pottery and create your own set of ornaments.

Using the sgraffito method, students will scratch fraktur designs into red clay, create a small collection of ornaments. After the workshop, Emily will bisque fire your pieces, cover them in a clear glaze and fire once more. Finished ornaments can be picked up four weeks after the workshop.

All ability levels are welcome, ages 13–100.

Cost for this workshop is $75. Find details and tickets at mennonitelife.org/events.
