SEED Church Leadership Development for English Language Learners

Do you know someone with a growing leadership ability who could serve in even more dynamic ways in the church with more training and confidence?

SEED is a 3-year church leadership development program specially designed for English-as-second-language learners.  It includes studies in Biblical literacy, church history, and leadership, as well as practical topics that target the ministry needs of urban, refugee, and recent immigrant churches. Classes study as cohorts on two Saturday mornings a month from September through May.  To enroll or for more information, contact Chris or Dawn Landes at  cdlandes@habeckerchurch.com or 717-799-3900.

Two significant distance-learning opportunities
are available to you this fall:

Shawn Otto, Congregational Counseling
&
Troy Landis, Discipling Others

Training in Ministry classes are designed to equip people to more effectively minister in the home, church, neighborhood, and work environments. All classes are delivered online with state-of-the-art learning methods.
To apply, go to
https://rosedale.edu/tim-application/

Congregational Counseling provides skills for mental health intervention in the congregation and community. Topics like premarital counseling, grief counseling, marriage counseling, parenting, and referral training are covered. Shawn Otto is a pastor at Bethel Mennonite Church in Sarasota, Florida and a trained counselor.

In our current situation, this class is quite relevant. "Experts warn prolonged isolation during the pandemic may worsen or trigger mental health problems." (https://www.sciencenews.org/article/coronavirus-covid-19-social-distancing-psychological-fallout)

Discipling Others equips students to aid others in their growth in Christ in the context of personal relationships. The class will cover both pre-conversion and post-conversion discipleship. Troy Landis is co-pastor at Living Light Mennonite Church and previously led Discipleship Ministries at Eastern Mennonite Missions. He has experience as a cross-cultural missionary.

Alan Hirsch argues that "we need to reconceive discipleship as a process that includes pre-conversion discipleship and post-conversion discipleship."

Training in Ministry, or TiM, developed through a collaboration of Rosedale Bible College, CMC, and LMC. The program includes a total of 16 courses organized in five tracks. See the attached brochure.

Each 10-week course earns three credits and costs $900. The Fall session begins the week of September 14 and ends the week of November 20.
Both LMC and CMC students are eligible for scholarships
through their respective conferences.

Students who complete three courses in a track
will be invited to attend a free course (3-credits) in a retreat format at Rosedale Bible College in August of 2021.

As you consider this option for yourself, consider others in your congregation who might similarly benefit, pass on this information, and encourage their participation.

For more details contact Brinton Rutherford, LMC (brutherford@lmchurches.org) or Steve Swartz, CMC (steve@cmcrosedale.org).

God Promised To Be With Us
by Basil Marin

We are living in a moment of history crippled by the Covid-19 pandemic. As if the pandemic were not enough, police brutality in Minneapolis, MN has led to protests, violence, and vandalism in cities and communities across the country.

How do we reconcile the horror of pandemic, violence, injustice, and social upheaval with the promise of God to be with us? This question begs to be answered.

Basil Marin is uniquely qualified to address these questions. He spoke recently at Weaverland's VBS from an Anabaptist faith perspective deeply rooted in the Scriptures. He speaks out of his own rich experiences as a follower of Jesus, husband, father, pastor, and community faith leader. To watch the recorded sessions go to Basil Marin - God Promised To Be With Us

Volunteer opportunity with Eastern Mennonite Missions
Need a break from being at home? There is an opportunity for you to volunteer at EMM's new office building at 450 North Prince Street, currently under construction. We're looking for help pulling new ethernet cables throughout the building. The work is not very physically demanding, however, volunteers should be in reasonably good health. We will follow strict COVID-19 guidelines, by providing work masks for all volunteers, and everyone must abide by 6-foot social distancing parameters. If you're interested in signing up for a time during the month of June, you can go to emm.org/cables
Cancelation of Eastern Mennonite Missions Events
EMM staff members have spent the past several months closely following the COVID-19 developments and praying diligently for all who are being impacted. We have made the challenging decision to CANCEL Global Fair and the worker commissioning service this summer. We have also modified our Kingdom Team experience to an online setting. We're hoping that conditions will allow us to have the EMM banquet on November 12. Make sure to check emm.org for the most up-to-date information.

Even though Landis Adult Day Services (ADS) is still closed, the needs of clients and their families have not decreased. Although ADS clients are staying safe by staying home, this puts tremendous pressure on their caregivers, especially those who are caring for loved ones with memory loss. It is more important than ever to be prepared for their return when Landis ADS is permitted to open. You can help by participating as a golfer or sponsor for our Golf Event, held July 24 at Fox Chase Golf Club.  Register through July 10. For more information contact Janice Nikoloff, Events Specialist, at 717-381-3580 or https://bit.ly/2020ADSGolf.
The No Longer Alone Family Support Group, now supported by Landis Communities, will continue to meet the fourth Sunday of every month.  The guest speaker for July will be Cathy Myers, facilitator of Minds Renewed at Calvary Church. Her presentation on "Minds Renewed" will be followed by a time of sharing. The public meeting is scheduled for Sunday, July 26 from 3:00- 5:00 p.m. via Zoom. Meetings will be held via Zoom until further notice and will return to Landis Communities as soon as possible. The monthly meetings provide a place for those who have a loved one living with mental illness to learn and share their experiences. For information on joining the Zoom meeting or to receive a monthly meeting reminder, call 717-381-3500 or email JAlbright@landis.org.
If you know a resident at Landis Homes, please consider sending them a message of love and support.  To do this, go to https://www.landishomes.org/messages/.  You can leave a written note and even attach images to share with them. The note will be printed and placed in the resident's mailbox.
During these uncertain times, people have been wondering how they can help when they are to be keeping a distance from people and many volunteering options have been curtailed.  Landis Communities is seeking assistance in creating reusable face masks.  Please see the attached information for the masks we are seeking for use at Landis Homes and Welsh Mountain Home.  Finished items made be dropped off at either location.  If you have questions, please contact Moniqua Acosta in Volunteer Services 717-509-5409.  The following video link will be helpful as you create them.  https://youtu.be/ueWkAuY3k6Y
