Contact Sherrie Ober at 717-898-2251 ext. 269 for details. | | Community Corn Pickin' 5K at Oregon Dairy | | On Saturday, October 8, 2022 Oregon Dairy will host a Community Corn Pickin' 5K Race to support non-profit organizations in the Village of Oregon! The 5K race will start and finish at the Oregon Dairy Corn Maze Barn, cross scenic farmland, wind through Landis Homes Community, and finish with a lap through the famous Corn Maze. The event will also include a 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk and Kids' Dash. All proceeds from the race will benefit Landis Homes, Friendship Community, and COBYS Family Services. The donation goal for the event is $5,000 and the proceeds will be split three ways among these impactful organizations. Donations given to Landis Homes will help ensure that aging adults and their families have the peace of mind and financial support to live healthy, meaningful lives. The contributions to Friendship Community will support their residential living and day services within their mission of cultivating the capabilities of individuals with Intellectual Disability and Autism. Donations benefiting COBYS will support their wide range of services including foster care, adoption, permanency, counseling, and family life education services for children and families at risk. Learn about Indigenous life and enter a longhouse. Tour the home built in 1719 for the Herr family made from sandstone quarried on the property. Celebrate harvest, community, and shop to your heart's content. Adults, $10, Children (7-17) $7, complimentary for age 6 and under. Underground Railroad Learning Tour Learn about the secret network of safe houses where formerly enslaved Africans found support in their quest for freedom at the Underground Railroad Learning Tour on Saturday, October 23, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm, beginning at the Columbia Crossing River Trail Center. This walking tour includes wheelchair accessibility for seven of eight of the storytelling sites. Hosted by Mennonite Life and the African-American Historical Society of South Central PA. Tickets are $40 per person and have sold quickly in the past. Register by October 19. Collections Feature: Fraktur Your glimpse behind the scenes: see eleven fraktur pieces in the Mennonite Life collection not currently on display. Hear David Johnson, local historian, and author, discuss them on October 27, 7 pm in the Community Room of the Collections building. Following this complimentary one-hour event, enjoy a light reception and an opportunity to start your holiday shopping in our museum store. Pre-registration is encouraged but not required.
