What's happening at the Hub?

Our mission:

We are a welcoming Hub for the Nations. As a community center, we build bridges across cultures through hospitality, learning, and creativity.

We are a ministry of Eastern Mennonite Missions and you can read about all that they do and their values on their website here. Though Hub 450 is very new, we are continuing the work that EMM has been doing in central PA and around the world since 1894.

September at the Hub

On September 7th the intern team met for the first time at a retreat hosted in partnership with Harbor Fellowship Church! Under Deb Meunstermann's leadership, interns will support the functioning of Hub 450, helping with the running of an international cafe and supporting various programs while also receiving mentorship and vocational training for cross-cultural ministry over the course of the next year.

On September 24th interns held a movie night, showing "The Good Lie" and sharing with the community about the heart behind our work at Hub 450. Several interns are also raising support to enable the work that they are doing and were grateful for the response of the community to walk alongside them. If you are interested in also partnering with them, you can do so at this link:

On September 9th our community celebrated the opening of a new welcome center and being re-certified as an official Welcoming City. As we are preparing to welcome more refugees than ever before in the next year, we are excited to see old programs continuing (such as Global Women's Village and Citizenship Tutoring Classes) and new ones starting (such as ESL classes and arts healing groups) at the Hub to better meet the needs of these new neighbors.

October at the Hub

On October 13th, Neighbors Cafe provided drinks for EMM's "Called to Proclaim the  Good News" Banquet. The cafe will be opening in Spring of 2023!

The CORE Afterschool program began in the beginning of this month, and we have been blown away by the response of volunteers and community members looking to build relationships with refugee and immigrant youth. The program will continue through the rest of the school year.

Current Needs

Starting in the rest of October and into next month we are excited to begin offering some of the following classes and programs:

  • Citizenship Tutoring is starting again in partnership with Crossroads Mennonite Church
  • The Haven is a program which will begin offering various arts healing and ESL opportunities for Afghan refugees over the next few months
  • Arts Healing classes for men will be starting soon in the evenings
  • Driver's Hope classes will be starting on November 2nd

Intern Spotlight: Nolan Deck

In his work at Hub 450, Nolan will be leading a team focused on opening a cafe which will be a gathering place for the nations and a place to connect with our neighbors. His vision incudes two main goals: to both bring in different foods and drinks made by refugees and to have it be a safe space to gather, as well as to be educational for the public, bringing in our community to learn from our new neighbors.

Nolan's experience of hospitality and love in other cultures will be central to his work at Hub 450 and the ministry of the cafe and we are excited to see how God uses his vision and giftings to bless our community. Also, if Nolan could fill a swimming pool with one substance, he would fill it with root beer because "even though it would be sticky, the carbonation would be awesome."

Thank you for making it to the end of this newsletter! We will leave you with this question which Jesus dares us to ask...

And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How do you read it?" And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself." And he said to him, "You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live." But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?
