Cultural suggestions from Latin America:

  • Latin American Anabaptist churches worship in multiple languages: Spanish, German, Portuguese, and several Indigenous languages. Each language group has its own worship style.
  • Many Latin American congregations have an informal and flexible worship style, with lots of singing, time for testimonies and prayers, and time to chat after worship.
  • Spanish-speaking churches often sing with guitar, percussion, and electric keyboard accompaniment; with "gusto"; more likely in unison than in parts; and projecting the words instead of using a hymnbook.

Learn the basics of Kurrentschrift at Mennonite Life's Winter Workshop: Intro to German Script on Friday, February 9, 10:00–11:30 a.m., in the Mennonite Life Community Room.

Mennonite Life Archivist & Librarian Julia Wiker will teach participants the German script alphabet, as well as abbreviations and variations in writing and spelling. The session will also offer practice interpreting 18th- and 19th-century family records from Mennonite Life's collections.

Learning to interpret Kurrentschrift can be a valuable skill for genealogy research, not just for those with Swiss-Mennonite ancestry, but for anyone with ancestral roots in German-speaking countries. You'll also find Kurrentschrift in the Pennsylvania German art of fraktur, which combines the elegant script with vibrant, colorful illustrations.

Basic knowledge of written German is recommended for this workshop, but not required. The workshop cost is $45. Advance registration is required by Wednesday, February 7.  In the case of inclement weather on February 9, this workshop will be postponed to Friday, February 16, 2024.  For more information visit: Intro to German Script

Open Saturdays at the Mennonite Life Library

All are welcome to visit the library. Use of library research materials and archives is complimentary for Mennonite Life members, and $7 per day for non-members.

1719 Museum Tour Guide Training
Learn about Lancaster County's earliest history and share your knowledge with others. The 1719 Museum seeks community members to guide tours of the Herr House and Lancaster Longhouse in the spring, summer, and fall of 2024. Volunteers are asked to commit to attending all four training sessions and at least one tour date per month.

The 1719 Museum tells the stories of Lancaster County's Indigenous peoples and earliest European immigrants. This is a four-session training course held on Saturday mornings: January 27, February 3, February 24, and March 2, 2024. All sessions will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., except for the February 3 session, which will be extended in length (exact timing TBA).

Sessions will educate volunteers on topics relevant to leading tours at the 1719 Museum, including Lancaster County's Indigenous history, European Mennonite migration to the area, and techniques for guiding large groups through the museum.
