Church That Helped Them Find It

by Jeanne Jacoby Smith, Ed.D.

Available on www.amazon.com

"Refugees! A Family's Search for Freedom and a Church That Helped Them Find It" recounts the story of a family who escaped their home during a time of war. Afloat on the high seas for many days, they were salvaged by the United Nations. Their new life began when a church in Ohio opened its doors to resettle them.

From the moment the refugees stepped off the plane, the author leads readers through her church's experience as the family adapted to their new surroundings. From setting up a household, to teaching the refugees English, finding them a job, and acclimating them to their new life in America, the author walks churches through the process of resettling refugees in the common era.

Fwd: Berks county jail

Pastor Horning,

It was a pleasure to speak with you today and I'm appreciative in your interest in regards to for profit jailing. I'm attaching a few links that provide some of the issues with attempting to incarcerate while earning a profit on filled inmate beds. As discussed, if after reviewing what privatizing the jail could bring to Berks County I have options of different levels of support that can be provided.  Once again thank you.

CWS: Dadaab Refugee Camp Re-cap and Information Session

When: November 13th, 2017 @ 5:30pm at James Street Mennonite Church, Lancaster, Pa

Local CWS-Lancaster staff member, Omar visited the world's 2nd largest refugee camp, Dadaab, located in Kenya, Africa in June of 2017. Omar traveled to Dadaab-- a place he formally called home-- and delivered school supplies purchased through local funds raised at a screening of documentary film, Warehoused.

Now, Omar is back in Lancaster and has a story to share.

As the world faces an increasingly urgent humanitarian and refugee crisis, the US continues to challenge the last option of hope-- resettlement to a third country-- for most of the world's refugees, including those living in Dadaab.

Please join us on November 13th from 5:30pm-7pm at James Street Mennonite Church, Lancaster, Pa, for a re-cap of Omar's experience, but also for an information session on what you can do to stand up for refugees from all over the world.

Registration is FREE, but required for this event.

30-years of Welcome: Thank you, Lancaster!

On September 30th, we spent an evening with you in celebration of Lancaster's 30-years of welcome to refugees and immigrants. We are so grateful to you, for showing such incredible welcome over the years. In case you missed it, we also honored Sheila Mastropietro, Lancaster Office Director, for her 30 years of service to Church World Service in Lancaster. And lastly, we debuted a short documentary, generously sponsored in full by the Islamic Community Center of Lancaster, and Aurora Films. Take a moment and check it out here

Advocacy Update:

Refugees and Immigrants need your voice. We know this has been a long journey as we stand for the rights and freedom of refugees and immigrants, who only want to rebuild and live their lives free from war, terror, and famine. And sadly, the time to rest is not here yet, because refugees and immigrants continue to face descrimination and prejudice from the POTUS. We know that you believe in the opportunity for safety and freedom for all. You've walked beside refugees this far-- we must remain strong and unwavering-- and keep up the pressure-- because the world is counting on us.

On Thursday, October 26th, the House Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing to determine the "Oversight of the US Reception and Placement program." The House Judiciary Committee MUST hear from us, expressing support of refugees and immigrants from all over the world.

Please take a moment to make that call now. You can get all the information you need here

Thank you for continuing to stand strong, Lancaster.

We are just 22 days away from...

Please join us for Lancaster's greatest day of online giving! We hope you will celebrate the day with us as we travel the city by day, and then settle in for the evening at Tellus360 from 5-9pm. We are proud to be a part of a dynamic community, that gives a little EXTRA during the Extraordinary GIVE. Stay tuned for details of the day on our Facebook page. See you there!

Language Beyond Borders: A Social Enterprise of CWS

Language Beyond Borders won 4th place in the Great Social Enterprise PITCH, and we are excited to get to work on this Interpretation and Translation project. This social enterprise project of Church World Service in Lancaster will benefit the refugee and immigrant communities, and those who serve them in the Lancaster County region, by providing quality language service to those in need. All profits gained from the Language Beyond Borders project will feed directly back to refugee programs of CWS-Lancaster-- making this the ultimate 'for good' project. Stay tuned for more details!

As always, we are most grateful to you for your support.

Gratefully,
