Fwd: Two great court victories!

Subject: Two great court victories!
To: <info@gehmanmennonitechurch.org>

Dear Friend,

I'm writing to encourage you today with news of two important court victories. The U.S. Court of Appeals just delivered a victory for a public university professor disciplined over pronouns, and a Pennsylvania appellate court delivered an important victory upholding our state pro-life laws.

Victory #1: Appeals Court Rules in Favor of Professor's Free Speech Rights Involving Pronouns, Quoting Independence Law Center Brief in Opinion

Dr. Nicolas Meriwether, a philosophy professor at Shawnee State University, was punished by the university because he declined a male student's demand to be referred to as a woman, with feminine titles and feminine pronouns. Dr. Meriwether offered to use the student's first or last name, but the public university in Ohio and the student demanded the professor speak and act contrary to his philosophical and religious convictions about the nature of sex. The university formally charged him with creating a hostile work environment, placed a written warning in his personnel file and threatened "further corrective actions" unless he articulated the university's ideological message. Dr. Meriwether, represented by our friends at Alliance Defending Freedom, initially lost in court, but the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit vindicated his rights in Meriwether v. Hartop.

This ruling correctly identifies the constitutionally protected right to freely express your beliefs — and the freedom not to say something you disagree with — without fear of losing your job. As the court said, "Our universities traditionally have been beacons of intellectual diversity and academic freedom," and rightly so. This ruling simply affirms that tradition.

Because of your support, the Independence Law Center represented amici curiae (friend of the court) parties — numerous academics specializing in philosophy, theology, law, political science, and medicine — through filing an amicus brief on their behalf supporting Dr. Meriwether. The brief highlights the problems with applying gender identity ideology. The court recognized (quoting the brief — your brief) that his speech "concerns a struggle over the social control of language in a crucial debate about the nature and foundation, or indeed real existence, of the sexes."

Thank you for your support that made this brief possible, a brief that helped to frame the issues for the court.

Victory #2: PA Appeals Court Delivers Setback to Abortion Industry's Demand for Public Funding

The abortion industry in Pennsylvania (abortion clinics and regional Planned Parenthoods) sued the Commonwealth demanding that our prohibition of taxpayer-funded abortion through Medicaid be struck down as violating the Pennsylvania constitution. The abortion industry is arguing that the abortion funding prohibition violates the Pennsylvania constitution's Equal Rights Amendment and Pennsylvania's Equal Protection provision because, according to the industry, abortion itself is a right protected by the Pennsylvania constitution.

Consider what they are asking for: a right to taxpayer funding of elective abortion and a ruling that the Pennsylvania constitution requires abortion-on-demand! Roe v. Wade at the federal level is bad enough, but a state court ruling could go much further than Roe.

The good news is that the Commonwealth Court (one of Pennsylvania's appellate courts) just announced in Allegheny Reprod. Health Ctr. v. Pa. Dep't of Human Servs., that the abortion industry lacked standing to bring the constitutional challenge. In other words, the court said that a lawsuit could only be brought by a Medicaid recipient, not by the abortion industry.

We expect the abortion industry to seek review before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. And our legal team is already preparing an amicus brief in support of Pennsylvania's abortion law. If the state Supreme Court rules in favor of the abortion industry, our existing pro-life laws could be reversed! Stay tuned, and we'll keep you updated on the latest.

We're grateful for you and your support for our work, which allows us together to stand for important issues like the right to life and our freedom of speech and freedom of conscience.

Sincerely,

Randall Wenger

Join Will Graham on April 2 for this evangelistic Easter event with Aaron Shust.

What's So Good About Good Friday
Dear Friend,

The cross is one of the most common symbols of the Christian faith. I've seen cross necklaces, cross tattoos, and even cross-shaped Easter candy. It seems like everywhere you look (especially this time of year), you'll see a cross.

But what did Jesus actually accomplish on the cross? What did His incredible suffering and sacrifice do for mankind, and why does it still matter to you and me?

Please join me on Good Friday, April 2, at 4 p.m. ET for a special Good Friday live stream. Along with award-winning musical artist Aaron Shust, I'll share about what happened on the cross, and how it impacts eternity for each of us as we call upon Jesus as Savior.

In addition, prayerfully consider those around you who need to hear a message of peace with God through the finished work of the cross. Invite them to watch with you either in person or online. Eternity is at stake. Please don't miss this opportunity.

Will Graham

Refugee Flights are STILL Being Cancelled

The Biden administration previously proposed and met with Congress to discuss increasing the refugee admissions goal for this year to 62,500 to meet the  ever evolving refugee crisis.

Now, it is vital that President Biden sign the revised refugee admissions goal for FY21 as soon as possible. Each day that passes without this signed executive action is another day that hundreds of particularly vulnerable refugees are forced to wait to be resettled.

URGENT TAKE ACTION: Urge Biden Administration to Protect Refugees

Read CWS Lancaster's Response to President Biden's Initial Refugee & Immigration Actions

"On his first day in office, President Joe Biden made clear that immigration reform was a priority as he signed seven executive orders directly addressing pressing refugee resettlement and immigration needs.

Together, these orders protect recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (or "Dreamers"); end the former administration's ban on refugees and immigrants from certain predominantly Muslim countries; promise to raise the ceiling on refugee resettlement for 2021; and create a Justice Department task force to reunite families separated at the border.

While President Biden has made considerable progress on many of these efforts, roughly 60 days into his administration he has yet to sign the presidential determination that would raise the refugee admission ceiling to 62,500 as promised in January. Every day this determination remains unsigned means refugees in the hardest hit places on earth see their flights to freedom canceled, while resettled refugees in Lancaster County continue to be separated from the wives, mothers, fathers and sons they've been awaiting for too long.

Many commentators have characterized the administration's initial executive orders as bold moves forward, but in reality they are merely a restoration of previously existing policies affirming our national calling to provide safety and welcome for those fleeing dangerous conditions in other countries. While these initial steps from the Biden administration do give us hope, there is still a long road ahead to rebuild both the immigration system and refugee resettlement program."

CWS Decries Rise of Anti-Asian Violence, Mourns Lives Lost in Georgia

We are heartbroken and outraged by the murder of six Asian women in Georgia, and we mourn with our partners, colleagues, and the AAPI communities and clients we serve who are reeling from the increased violence they are experiencing nationwide and around the world. CWS has a long tradition of working with Thai, Burmese, Bhutanese and Chinese communities in the U.S. as well as with communities in countries across Asia. We feel these attacks with them, and with our Asian colleagues. There is no room for such hatred in a just and peaceful world.

Refugees Are Welcome Here

Meet Ruhama, Marie, Sami, Apsara and Muna. All five are refugees or asylum seekers who have participated in programs through our office in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. All five are using their strength to make their community a safer, healthier, more vibrant place.

Each woman was nominated for recognition by CWS staff and you'll see why in the blog post below. We also asked each for their own views on what makes a strong woman, why it's important to welcome refugees and immigrants into our communities, and what they love most about life in the United States.

See the full blog post to hear what they had to say!

Meet the Team!

We would like to offer you a "look behind the curtain" each month by introducing our dedicated staff to you and detailing what they do in their daily work with refugees, immigrants, and asylum seekers.

This month we are introducing you to Andrew Mashas! Andrew has been working as the Community and Faith-Based Engagement Specialist in our Development Program since November 2020. In this role, Andrew works closely with the Lancaster community to connect to a welcoming support network, especially upon their arrival to the United States. Andrew works with Welcome Teams who collaborate with CWS to empower a refugee family new to Lancaster by walking alongside them in intentional friendship, breaking through the cycle of isolation that oftentimes comes with being new to a community.

We are so grateful to have Andrew as a part of the team. He is full of energy and passion to empower the most vulnerable among us. He always has a funny story on hand and is a wonderful father to his two kiddos, Simon and Theo. We are so grateful for the work that you do, Andrew!

Reach out to Andrew to set up a donation appointment and/or to speak with him about his role in creating Welcome Teams! amashas@cwsglobal.org

While you're here, would you make a recurring donation?
Your contributions made through CWS Lancaster work within programs serving refugees and immigrants of Lancaster County. Thank you!

We are looking to onboard Welcome Teams! Interested in learning more about this incredible opportunity to walk beside some of Lancaster's newest refugee arrivals? Let's be in touch!

Are you thinking about planned giving or stock designation? We would be happy to talk.
