In this week's Family Update we talk about the importance of the upcoming election. Are Issues You Care About on the Ballot?  What comes with cooler weather, back to school, and the leaves changing color? Election season, of course! You've likely already seen many political ads and mailers already, but it is just the beginning until we reach Election Day on Tuesday, November 5th. And for good reason: this year's elections have the power to impact the issues and values you and I care about from who becomes our next president to who represents you in the state House and state Senate in Harrisburg.  But when we say that the issues you care about are at stake in this election, what exactly does that mean? Well here are some current threats to the sanctity of life, faith and family, our local lawmakers could be voting on in our state capitol: The Abortion Industry's Wishlist Bill. House Bill 2304 would overturn every pro-life protection we currently have, including removing protections for babies born alive in failed abortions. Currently, our law requires these babies to receive every effort by medical staff to provide them care and comfort - but that is erased under HB 2304. It would remove our law requiring parental consent before a minor could obtain an abortion. It eliminates the 24-hour waiting period and informed consent. This legislation would allow painful, late-term abortions and force taxpayer funding for such horrific procedures. Worse, HB 2304 is one of more than 30 bills introduced in this legislative session alone that would expand and increase the number of abortions, an unprecedented number. House Bill 300 Threatens Privacy, Religious Liberty, Fairness in Girls Sports, and More: HB 300 was introduced by several Democrat members of the legislature, and it poses a threat to your bodily privacy in public spaces and to religious freedom. Everyone deserves the right to be treated with dignity and respect. But HB 300 would instead make radical changes to our state non-discrimination law by creating special protected classes for "sexual orientation" and "gender identity," thereby creating a host of consequences that impact religious freedom and privacy rights. Female athletes would be forced to compete against men who identify as female, and would lose their right to privacy in spaces like bathrooms, locker rooms, dorms, and shelters. Religious entities such as Christian schools and ministries could lose the right to exercise their convictions about human sexuality in employment and more. Creative professionals could be forced to engage in messages that violate their conscience. Medical doctors could be forced to prescribe hormones or perform sex reassignment surgeries. Women's shelters could be forced to admit men who identify as women. Aggressive Push for Marijuana for Recreational Use. With multiple bills introduced that would legalize marijuana for recreational use, in addition to several rallies and committee hearings, there is a serious push to the commercializations of marijuana in Pennsylvania. This puts the interests of the Marijuana Industry (run by Big Tobacco) over the interests of families. These proposals would lead to pot shops in your neighborhood, without the ability for your community to opt-out. We know from other states that when marijuana is legalized, it will lead to increased youth use, increased car accident fatalities, workplace safety issues and other societal harms. One of the most important things you can do is exercise your right to vote and encourage friends, neighbors, and fellow church members to vote and to vote wisely!  Make your plan to vote. 2024 Annual Winter Coat Program: Collection Drive!   Good Afternoon Partners! CrossNet Ministries is gearing up for our Annual Winter Coat Program! We would love for you, your church, or your business to participate in collecting coats for this event! Any person or group donating NEW coat(s) will be entered in a drawing to win a $50 gift card! Our drive runs the entire month of September. The coats donated help over 500 kids in our community stay warm through the winter months. How can you specifically get involved: Collect and donate NEW or gently used coats for kids or teens (all ages!) Collect and donate hats and gloves (especially waterproof gloves!). Collect and donate new or used winter boots and snow pants. Donate all items to CrossNet by Friday, October 4th, 2024. Drop Off Location & Hours: The CrossNet Office located at 123 W. Franklin St, New Holland, PA. Drop-off days and times are Monday-Thursday, between 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM and on Fridays between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM.
