- Mission and Migration: Latin America is the book to be discussed on Sunday afternoon, November 23, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Grantham Brethren in Christ Church (421 Grantham Rd., Mechanicsburg, Pa.).
Lancaster, Pa., November 5, 2014—If you love to read, enjoy discovering how the past has affected the present, or are intrigued by the global church, don't miss the upcoming book discussion of one of the volumes in Mennonite World Conference's Global Mennonite History Series.

"We're preparing to welcome the global church to next summer's MWC Assembly in Harrisburg by reading about our guests," says Emerson Lesher, who will chair the conversation about the book.
"We will have a panel of five leaders who have lived and served in Latin America join us for our discussion of this book about the history of Mennonite churches throughout Latin America," explains Lesher.

- Hugo Zorrilla was born in Colombia, where he also pastored for many years. He has taught in Costa Rica at the Latin American Biblical Seminary. And for 35 years he has taught pastors and leaders through SEMILLA, the Latin American Anabaptist Seminary.
- Andres and Amy Zorrilla have recently served with Mennonite Central Committee as representatives in Honduras. They have also worked with MCC in Bolivia.
- Curtis Book has done pastoral leadership training in Nicaragua and in Colombia with Brethren in Christ World Missions. He has also taught at the Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary in Bogota, Colombia, and served on the Board of CLARA, a collaborative Anabaptist resourcing organization in Latin America.
- Carl Horning served with Eastern Mennonite Missions as a schoolteacher in Tegucigalpa in Honduras. Later, as a bishop in Lancaster Mennonite Conference, he periodically visited EMM-related churches in Central America and Mexico as a fraternal representative of the Conference.
Mission and Migration: Latin America is the first comprehensive history to be written by a Latin American Mennonite historian about Mennonite church life in Central and South America—from its beginnings.
The first Mennonite church to take root in Latin American soil gathered for worship in 1919, in the town of Pehuajo, Argentina. It was the result of North American mission efforts and represents one major impulse for planting Mennonite churches in Latin America.
The second major impulse came with the settling of Mennonite colonists in Mexico, Paraguay, and Brazil in the 1920s and 1930s. These immigrants came in large migrations from Canada and Russia, seeking religious and ethnic freedom and a new future.
These initial missions and migrations were followed by many internal missions of the newly founded churches and communities.
Jaime Prieto Valladares, Professor of Church History and Cultural Studies at the Latin American Biblical University in San Jose, Costa Rica, spent more than a decade researching and writing this unique historical account.
He writes in depth about the early missions in both Central and South Americas. And then he explores in depth, the development and life of the churches in the Southern Cone, the Andean Region, the Caribbean, and Mesoamerica (often referred to as Central America).
"You're welcome on November 23, even if you haven't read the book," comments Lesher. "We'll have a lively conversation and learn a lot!"
The book discussion is sponsored by Mennonite World Conference, Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, and the Brethren in Christ Historical Society.
