More than 20 million people across Yemen, Somalia, South Sudan, and northeast Nigeria are facing or are at risk of famine. Mennonite Central Committee is working in the area to provide emergency food assistance and increase its response to the crisis. Because of serious conflicts and concerns for safe, unimpeded access for humanitarian assistance, this process is slow and challenging. To donate to MCC's relief fund, which supports MCC's response to this disaster and others, visit mcc.org/learn/what/relief, call 1-888-563-4676 or send a check to MCC, PO Box 500, Akron, PA 17501-0500. Relief Kits and Comforters Needed MCC is currently requesting donations of relief kits and comforters. Relief kits provide valuable supplies to families whose lives have been disrupted by war or disaster. A handmade comforter provides not only warmth but also a tangible message to people that their needs are not forgotten. For more information on either of these items and other kits, visit mcc.org/kits, or contact the Material Resources Center in Ephrata, PA, at (717) 733-2847 or EastCoastMRC@mcc.org. Sharing With Appalachia People (SWAP) Seeks Help Summer will be here before we know it, so make your summer plans now to join SWAP in Kentucky. Don't miss out on your chance to serve with this home repair ministry while learning about life in Appalachia. Groups or individuals can volunteer to serve as week-long volunteers. SWAP is also looking for summer staff to serve as job site coordinators and meals coordinators/cooks for three-month assignments. Summer staff are a critical component of SWAP's successful ministry, as they help facilitate the weekly SWAP service groups working on housing repair for low-income persons. Summer staff vary in age from 19 to 70+, and they receive meals, lodging and a weekly stipend for their service. For more information about bringing a group to SWAP or serving as summer staff, visit swap.mcc.org or contact Angela Maggard at AppalachiaAdmin@mcc.org or (606) 633-5065. Participate in a Meat Canning Event MCC's canning team will visit sites throughout the East Coast region in March, working with volunteers to prepare cans of meat that will be sent around the world. Visit mcc.org/canning to find a canning site near you. Ongoing Resources for Church LeadersSummer Service Grant Money Available Do you have a project or dream that you'd like to see fulfilled in your church/community? How might a young adult of color, aged 18-30, from your church/community help to further that dream or vision in 6-10 week term of summer service? With focus on leadership development, MCC is offering grant monies to churches/organizations who desire to utilize the skills and gifts of their young adults in summer service assignments. To learn about this program and/or request an application packet due March 31, 2017, visit mcc.org/summer-service. DOWNLOAD AND SHARE: Survey of Church Leaders about MCC's SALT Program MCC's Serving and Learning Together (SALT) program is a one-year international serving and learning program for young adults in the United States and Canada. Since 1981, almost 1,200 young adults have served alongside MCC partners around the world. MCC is conducting a short survey of church leaders to strengthen and improve the SALT program. If you are a church leader who has any experience or is in any way familiar with the SALT program, we would love to hear from you! Please take a few minutes to respond to this anonymous online survey: https://mcc_us.formstack.com/ Welcoming Immigrants and Refugees as Neighbors Mennonite Central Committee U.S. decries the executive actions on immigration enforcement taken this week by President Trump as well as actions on refugee resettlement expected later. In our society, rejection of the immigrant—"the other"—still runs deep. By building walls and turning away refugees we ignore Christ's call to care for those in need and to love the newcomer. We encourage you to consider new ways you can welcome immigrants and refugees as neighbors in your community, and to make your voice heard by contacting the White House and your members of Congress. Pray with us for hearts of love toward one another. |
