On March 14th many students across the nation participated in a walk out in protest of the recent shooting that took place in a Florida school. Ephrata High School and Middle School participated in this demonstration. They scheduled a seventeen minute time frame where students could choose not to participate, walk the football field (encouraged to meet seventeen new people), or meet in the media center for a time of prayer. The prayer time, along with the other activities were student lead. I had the blessing of witnessing the students who chose to pray. Let me just say that it was awesome! There were well over 100 students in the room. They all formed small groups, holding hands and praying for our nation's gun violence problem. After many of them had finished praying they decided to have a time of worship. They put the song "No Longer a Slave to Fear" on a big TV screen and began to sing. Students began to hold each other, rocking back and forth. Then hands started to go up and the Holy Spirit just fell. How amazing to see students lifting up Holy hands in a public school library. After the song was over they begged to sing another one, but unfortunately, the seventeen minutes were up. All of the students there shared how awesome it was to gather in prayer and praise at school. God is on the move! While we see many disturbing things on the news, we can still claim that Jesus has the power to heal and overcome this darkness. -Mike Wenger |
