Featured Peacebuilder Alumni Stories

Glen was one of ten aid workers killed in Afghanistan in 2010. He was a witness to peace throughout his nursing career, travels, and volunteer work.

After Glen's death, a cousin orchestrated an informal volleyball tournament at LM in honor of his life. January 2020 will mark the tenth annual Glen Lapp Memorial Volleyball Tournament, now a fundraiser for scholarships for immigrant and refugee students at LM.

Ty started Advantage Lancaster, serving and mentoring dozens of school students. As a social worker, Carrie helps the most vulnerable, focused on pregnant and postpartum women.

Carrie says, "Ty and I are passionate about building up the community and kingdom. We both came out of dark situations and trauma...however God was ALWAYS present and used those life experiences to further His kingdom."

Anna serves as the Executive Director of Dove's Nest, a Mennonite organization that helps equip churches and faith communities with the tools to address and prevent child neglect and sexual abuse.

She always found LM to be a safe and welcoming place, and is glad that the school is working to implement the practices Dove's Nest developed, especially the Circle of Grace consent and safe environment curriculum.

Nelson J. Kraybill fondly recalls his time at Lancaster Mennonite School, and that it gave him a grounding in worship, Bible and a faith community.

In his current role as President of Mennonite World Conference (MWC) he was honored to be part of the important work of developing the Conference's Shared Convictions.

Featured Student & Teacher Stories

LM Bible teacher, Jim Amstutz, shares about the peace curriculum, peace practices and capstone projects his students participate in through his classes.

"What keeps me energized are those "aha!" sparks of recognition and the God-moments of transformation," says Jim.

About 40% of our LM students are students of color, but this statistic doesn't hold true when it comes to our faculty and administration. In order to be a safe and welcoming learning community for all students, we realized we needed to do some work when it comes to anti-racism.

We have and continue to hold anti-racism trainings and developed an anti-racism taskforce. The anti-racism taskforce is made up of 11 people, including teachers, administrators, and students.

A new tradition started for the boys basketball and boys volleyball teams last winter and spring. After home games, while the stands were clearing, players from both teams met at center court and huddled in prayer. It was a powerful display of what the true nature of sport and competition should be. Student athletes passionately competing against each other, and minutes later gathering to pray together.
