Author Talk: Amish Gardens of Lancaster County
Join us for an exploration of Amish kitchen gardens with author Beth Oberholtzer July 25 at 6:30 pm.

Kitchen gardens are a long-standing Amish tradition, characterized by their eclectic mix of vegetables, fruit, herbs, and colorful flowers. Planned by the women of the household, they are used not only to feed their families but as an artistic outlet. This book explores the family gardens as a portrait of the women who design, tend, and harvest them. Included are 32 family recipes straight from the garden: hot-pepper jam, fried green tomatoes, sweet dill pickles, sauerkraut for a crowd, corn fritters, and creamed celery. Like the resourceful women who tend them, each garden has its own personality and beauty.

Beth Oberholtzer is an author and book designer who grew up on a farm in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Her previous books are Working Horses of Lancaster County and Plain Meetinghouses of Lancaster County, both coauthored with John Herr.

Amish Gardens of Lancaster County is available for purchase here.

This event is complimentary. Streaming will be available.

Annual Storytelling Night

In a celebration of stories that transcend boundaries, Mennonite Life hosts its Annual Storytelling Night on Monday, August 5, at 7 p.m. at Mellinger Mennonite Church. Throughout the evening, local storytellers Josef Berthold and Becky Hess will relate a series of alternating short-form anecdotes from their lives.

Josef Berthold loves pastoring West End Mennonite Fellowship in Lancaster City, where he and his wife, Brenda, have lived for 30 years and raised their three boys. He is passionate about welcoming all people into a healing community where they can grow to be like Jesus. In his free time, Josef likes to ride his motorcycle and entertain his puppy, Charley.

Becky Hess is the human resources director at Eastern Mennonite Missions, where she discerns with her community by listening, following, and cooperating with the One who creates and invites us to "Come. Know me. Belong. Find help and life in all you do." Becky and her husband, Jack, have three adult children, and now Becky looks at life through the eyes of her one-year-old, five-month-old, and three-month-old grandbabies.

Annual Storytelling Night is a complimentary event. Mennonite Life welcomes donations to support its mission, which includes storytelling and history conservation efforts. The following week, a recording of the event will be available on Mennonite Life's YouTube channel.

Mennonite Life's vision is diverse communities connecting across boundaries by knowing and valuing their own and each other's stories of life, faith, cultures, and histories.
