The day-long celebration commemorates the birth of the Anabaptist movement in Zurich, Switzerland. Following workshops, concerts, a panel discussion, and self-guided historical walking tours, participants will gather for an ecumenical worship service at the Grossmünster cathedral. The symbolic beginnings of the Anabaptist movement date to January 1525, when a group of young people gathered in Felix Manz's home to commit a subversive act: adult baptism. Conrad Grebel baptized George Blaurock, who baptized several others on confession of their faith. The event will highlight hymns sung by nonresistant Mennonite and Brethren refugees fleeing participation in the war. This will include songs from Harmonia Sacra by Joseph Funk, a member of Peggy's community. In the book, Peggy is a Mennonite living in the midst of the Confederate Shenandoah Valley. Even as her husband is dying, she conceals non-resistant Brethren and Mennonites in a secret cellar beneath her bedroom floor. She does this while managing a farm, raising five children, and serving as a postmaster. This event is complimentary and does not require registration.
